Electrical engineering, explained.
Plain-language guides to help you plan, specify and look after your electrical installation.

What is an electrical EPC contract, and when does it make sense?
EPC puts engineering, procurement and construction under one contract and one accountable team. Here is how it works, what you give up in control, and when it is the right choice.

Power factor correction explained: why your electricity bill may be higher than it should be

Grid-tied, off-grid or hybrid solar: which system is right for your site?
The right solar system depends on how reliable your grid supply is, when you use power, and whether you need it during outages. A plain comparison of the three options.

Earthing and lightning protection: what they do and how to know yours works
A good earthing system is the reason a fault trips a breaker instead of making a metal casing live. What earthing and lightning protection do, and the signs yours needs testing.

Straight answers to the questions clients ask us most. If yours is not here, call us or send an enquiry.
Which areas do you work in?
We are based in Thika and work on projects across Kenya, for county and national government, utilities, industry, institutions and private developers.
Are you licensed to carry out electrical work?
Yes. DESWA Engineering holds an EPRA Electrical Contractor Licence and NCA contractor registration, and our director holds an EPRA electrician licence. Registration and licence numbers are listed on our About page and in our company profile.
How do I get a quote?
Use the quote form on our Contact page and attach any drawings, bills of quantities or photos you have. We review the details, arrange a site survey where needed, and send a technical proposal with a bill of quantities and programme.
Do you charge for a site survey?
It depends on the size and location of the project. Tell us about the job when you enquire and we will confirm any survey cost before we visit.
Can you handle Kenya Power applications and approvals?
Yes. As part of a project we prepare and submit the applications, wayleaves and approvals the utility and authorities require, and coordinate the inspection and connection.
What is the difference between EPC and a supply-and-install contract?
Under EPC we design, procure, build, test and hand over the whole installation under one contract and take responsibility for the result. Under a supply-and-install contract we build to someone else's design. Our guide to EPC contracts explains when each makes sense.
Do you work on solar and backup power?
Yes. We design and install grid-tied, off-grid and hybrid solar systems, battery storage and solar street lighting, and integrate them with existing supplies and generators.
What do we receive at handover?
As-built drawings, test and commissioning certificates, equipment manuals, and a walkthrough for your team on operating the installation safely.
Do you offer maintenance after a project is finished?
Yes. We offer planned maintenance, periodic testing such as earth resistance and insulation tests, and fault response, for installations we built and for existing systems.
Do you take students for industrial attachment?
Yes. Engineering students can apply for attachment through our Careers page by sending a CV.
